Wasabi San, Latest in Bedok

The promotional signs displayed: The most economical Japanese food.
First thought is Sumo House.
And indeed it is. I recognise the staff. Plus the bento presentation is the same, the salad and fruits served also the same!

I ordered the Japanese fried rice with chicken cutlet. Yakimeshi $4.80
The texture of the rice was rough, felt like brown rice. A bit oily and the ingredients added was too little. The breaded chicken looks dark but it was not over fried. Plus they even add on a piece of vegetable to soak the oil. Pickles were good, not too sour and the cucumber was still cruchy. Salad sauce too little.

Miss Yuying had yakiudon.
The same breaded chicken. Same pickles and same salad.
Udon was a bit too soft. She commented that the udon was salty, i had one mouth so i didn't feel it. Plus, no ingredients in the noodle.

Gyoza only at $1.80
5 pieces. Filling was normal minced meat with some parsely. Not very oily, some juicy meat. Was served with vinegar and not mayo. Quite weird cos vinegar is for chinese dumplings, not for jap gyoza.

This is Auntie note for wasabi san: Free flow green tea. Some more get yourself so won't pai seh.

GST already inclusive. Plus no service charge, indeed the most economical!

Ikea eat out

Was bored at home so decided to head to Ikea for some food and jalan jalan.
Jus some bored pics of me and hui....

So lets have some famous chicken wings. I have to say even though Ikea is suppose to sell furnitures they do put in effort in the food. I guess when you are addicted to the food you will come here often and end up being a customer even if it was only a cup or a photoframe, they get to benefit.

Chicken wings was delicious, it was pipping hot even though there were loads of people. Well marinated deep into the bones. The meat was tender and even my braces teeth can bite through it without difficulty.

Vegetarian spag to keep a balanced meal and stop myself from over eating.
Spag sauce used was slightly watery but good still. Not too little to cover all the pasta, but lacking in ingredients. Its like as thou telling all vegetarians that they are not important. Kind of sad. Please give more veggies!!!

Just a short post, will be back with a lot more. Was having an overeating weekend with boy and loads of photos overdue!

Auntie note: Find some one with Ikea Friends card to go with you and get to enjoy 2 free soft drinks or 2 coffee for free! plus, there is a daily special combo for members which is cheaper by quite a bit.

The famous? Think again.

The very much oomphed over hell spicy wings that is in the most secluded area of Singapore.

Yes, we found this place after getting lost in some air base area only to realise the restaurant is even more secluded. We followed some small yellow sign board in order to come this far.

We ordered level 2 cos some of my friends don't really take spicy food. level 2 is definitely tolerable i should say, the spice level is similar to normal dry ba chor mee chilli. However, what i felt lacking was the marinate of the chicken. Perhaps the restaurant can't cope with the large number of chicken wings they had to process each day and thus the chicken wings weren't really tasting well marinated at all. It had to depend on the chilli taste which was unable to deliver the full potential of bringing out the juicy chicken wings. Great disappointment. Half a dozen cost $18.50 and a dozen cost 29.50, the higher the level the more expensive it will be. I will rate this 2.4 out of 5.

We ordered our mains as well. This was boy's order. Pan fried fish $16.50

The small little piece of fish barely fills the stomach. It was topped with almonds which wasnt crispy, so what's the point? The side dishes weren't served with much sincerity as it doesn' look appetizing at all. 3 out of 5.

This is to share, BBQ combo with half a chicken, and half rack of pork ribs. Sky high price $29.80

The chicken was normal, not extremely delicious. Barely succenlent and not finger licking good. The pork ribs had a porky smell perhaps it was kept frozen for too long. Not fresh. The whole dish had to be finished off with the help of Mr Chilli Sauce. Thanks for the great invention. 2.8 out of 5

This is the best order for the day will be the deep fried button mushroom. I forgot the price thou but remembered it was expensive. Nearly a dollar for 1 mushroom if u divide it. Served pipping hot and filled with juicy mushroom that oozes when bitten. The batter used was well seasoned and it didn't cover the natuaral taste of the mushroom. It was slightly oily but i guess it is unavoidable. rate this 4.2 out of 5.

Auntie note: prices shown on the menu is inclusive of all taxes and there's no service charge. But even so, the prices are definitely over priced.

The overall ambience of the place isn't very much decorated. open air but u have to sit on kopitiam chair and table like as thou eating tze char. mosquito coil was placed on some of the tables and weren't warned of its presence. The toilet was filthy and the flush and lock were not working well, had to ask a fren to guard the door for me.

Totally had a bad experience dinning there.

Newly established

Even though it is tucked in a row of neighbourhood shops, Blic has done a tremendous good job in doing up the renovation to bring out a refreshing new look. The ice cream cafe landed in this heartland area and has attracted many young people to patronise the shop. I was there on a fri night and it was packed. We had to sit at the void deck instead. Even though the place serves ice cream, the famous specialty for the shop is durian ice cream. This is to warn people who dislike ice cream to keep away from Blic as you will not stand the aroma.

This was my order for the day. Ordered a pint which permits only 2 flavours and cost 9.50. Thats if you avoid the premiun flavours such as rum and raisin, baileys, or durian. A single scoop of premium will cost $4.50.

Texture of the ice cream was smooth and slides down your throat. The sea salt malt was a rather special flavour which you seldom see outside. It had a tinge of salty taste which brings out the sweet tasting malt. However, the malt taste is slightly mild. The milo dino was ok, tasted a bit chocolaty and not much of milo taste. i guess cocoa powder is still the main source for the taste and not milo powder.

Even though the two flavours were not really comparable to the famous brands, the location will still attract many of the teens as it is located near many schools. Keep going Blic. But do note the price a little as students are quite poor these days.
Auntie note: NO gst and svc charge. Carpark is quite full as mostly are season parking. Can go for a budget dinner at the coffee shop nearby as it serves quite good local dishes and come over for ice cream.

Swensens

Hi, I'm guest writer Yu Ying writing about my birthday meal at Swensens!
As it is my 21st Birthday, my family and I decided to go to Swensens at Changi Airport because we gian the free Firehouse ice cream for birthday girl. To our pleasant surprise, the person told us in the birthday promo, for every 3 main course ordered the 4th one is free! Great!

Here is the list of main course to choose from:

Not much variety though, the all time favourite Curry Baked Rice is not inside.

Appetizer:
For Appetizer, we ordered the Prawn and Fruit Salad. It is a refreshing dish as the lettuce is crunchy and chilled, topped with mango yogurt dressing (yogurt is suppose to be healthy right). The yogurt was only poured into the salad when the dish reached our table. I think this ensures freshness in the vegetables and not turn it soggy. However, I feel that the lettuce was a little bitter. There were also chunks of yellow fruits which we could not guess what was it until the end where my mom declared it to be jackfruit! There are also peaches and pineapples, making the salad sweet and refreshing. The prawns were normal.

Main Course:

My dad ordered Lamp Chops ($17.20)

The meat is succulent and juicy, with no hint of "yang shao wei" there is a slight smoked taste which i think covered the "yang shao wei". My dad commented he took quite long to chew the meat. It comes with "seasonal vegetables" which are just boiled vegetables (which consists of baby carrots, radish and asparagus) which in my opinion totally tasteless and undercooked.

My Mom ordered Fried Fish with Apricot Mayo ($14.90)

The apricot mayo tasted almost like the mango yogurt. The fish was crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside, the batter is good and not too thick with the right amount of batter and fish. It comes with coleslaw which helps to reduce the oiliness of the fried fish.

My Sis ordered Breaded Chicken Meuniere ($14.20)

Don't be deceived by the picture of dark looking piece of chicken, the chicken is actually very juicy and tender, fried till golden brown. Its just my camera's bad resolution. My sis commented that inside that piece of lemon are small bits of eggs! (If i did not hear wrongly). This set also comes with coleslaw however, my sis found a small piece of plastic inside!! I think it might be from the plastic containing the coleslaw =/

Lastly, I ordered: Beef Goulash with Potato ($15.90)

In my opinion the BEST DISH OF THE NIGHT. This beef stew is really to my liking. The brown sauce has a hint of many different spices somewhat tasted like curry and complements the mashed potato very well. However, my parents commented that it smelled of very strong curry spice which they did not like. But I totally love it. I think this dish is suitable for people who likes food with stonger tastes. It also comes with boring "seasonal vegetables" which i did not like. A thing to note however, I did not think the mash potato was "creamy" its just normal, plain mash potato without any seasoning, so without the awesome sauce, it would be tasteless.

Lastly, THE FIREHOUSE!! ($8.90)
Sorry no picture of it as we all happily gobbled it up before I remembered to take a pic. But i took a pic of it on the menu. Its just 3 scoops of ice cream with a banana in the middle and a lighted candle! Perfect way to end a birthday meal. A cake would be too filling.

Overall, it was a great meal!

Total cost of meal: $70 for 4 pax
Overall Rating: 4/5
Service: 4/5 Prompt and efficient, serving staff was really cheerful, but we waited quite long for the bill to come, I think they were too busy
Food: 4/5
Ambience: 4/5 Clean and Bright

Happy Birthday to Dear Mum

Mother's day and mummy's bday is always a few days apart. So we always celebrate the two important events together. By the way mummy of the 4 proud daughters. Luckily the cake got no candles. Hehe......
So, off to the northern side of Singapore we go to a vegetarian restaurant..... Greenland restaurant..... The place is air conditioned, it looks like the olden kind of 酒楼, with huge round tables and the table cloth on top. reminded me of bday celebrations i had when i was younger with my grandparents. those days were the best as kids were always treated like kings and queens by the elders.

First up is soup of the day
We have lotus roots and peanut soup. This soup is suppose to be good for the elderly as lotus roots are good for joints and peanuts are good for brain. Older people tend to experience strain in their knees especially, thus the soup can let them absorb the required nutrients. Peanuts on the other hand is to prevent dementia....

Mock glazed pork
The imitation pork was fragrant, chewy, bouncy and full of juice. meat is nicely done with a tinge of sweetness. they manage to fry the imitation meat to absorb the flavours of the sauce which can normally be absorbed by real meat if you simmer it long enough.

Mock Sweet and Sour Fish.
Anyone who has tasted mock fish will agree with me that the beauty of the fish lies with the many layers of beancurd skin being compacted together and the use of seaweed to wrap it up thus acting as the skin of the real fish. From young i like to eat mock fish as the texture is different from other imitation products. The sauce added blends well with the fish seeping in thru the folds and is soft to bite.

This is a big disappointment of the day.... tofu with special mushroom sauce. i guess the chef may have forgotten to add salt? because it was rather tasteless. even thou tofu was smooth it did not manage to save the dish.....

This is 菠菜 stir fry with mushroom. this is a common chinese new year dish because i don't know why..... vegetables are soft but not overcooked till it turns yellow, this retains the nutrition of the vegetable. the mushrooms are added to add a distinctive mushroom taste that only dried mushrooms offer.

this is a special dish that people who aren't vegetarians may not know. its 猴头菇. This is a species of mushroom and not some kind of monkey head as the name suggests. The mushroom is named after the monkey as it looks a bit hairy on the top.... this was stir fried with ginger and parsely with cashew nuts. i would say not the best way to deal with the dish. I have eaten once that mushroom was deep fried and stirred with sweet sour sauce, and it was heavenly.

auntie note: free parking is available at the temple abt 2 buildings away, i guess its a collaboration.
There is service charge :(
Rice is 80 cents a bowl. pickles at $3, towels at 40 cents, chinese tea at 1.30. i feel all these were overcharged.
For 8 adults, the total cost was $131.80 after taxes

Girl's Day Out

Another girls day out for makan and jalan jalan....

headed to Shiseido Sale early in the morning followed by some shopping and most importantly snacking

Don't be deceived by the huge looking cup of yogurt, its actually only up to half of its depth. JCO famous for donuts now offer even more varieties, yogurt.

now having a promotion for this fat free healthy food.

$4 for yogurt and 3 toppings.

We chose:

Strawberry -rich in vitamins and helps prevent cancer and heart disease.

Longan- Source of Fibre

Mandarin Orange - source of Vitamin A and Vitamin C.

Yogurt is slightly more sour than other similar brands.

Overall, it was a satisfying snack

BFF with lips licking good yogurt!

Auntie note: $4 to get a healthy snack is worth it. If you can afford some more, get a drink and JCO will give u a donut for FREE!!!!!!

Wednesday, May 19, 2010

girls day out is jus snacking, one after another.... we had lunch den ice cream den deep fried chicken.... anyway, I love taimei is a small snack shop located at bugis street exit, the side facing the market.
we had the set called 蔡伊林. i nv write wrongly k, tis is the exact name for the set....

it is inclusive of the chicken cutlet, and a cup of milk tea. choice of chicken cutlet can be bbq or honey. chicken was well fried, not dry, juicy and taste sweet. the taste deviates from shilin and ximen as they do not use chilli powder and sour plum powder but they own special powder. plus, the sesame added is extra fragrant.

something not as delicious will be the bubble tea. bitter and not sweet enough, not cold enough, plus the cup so small not enough leh....... how to compare with KOI?

unglam me eating chickennnnnnnn.....

up next will be tom's palette..... home made goodnesss.....

this is not advertorial la, so u won see very pretty looking girls. hahaha.

This was YY's hazelnut and salted caramel cheesecake. in comparison, the hazelnut lost its appeal. the salted caramel cheesecake was fantastic, it tasted like the real thing. with the slightly salted flavour, it enhances the sweetness of the creamy ice cream and brings out the unique flavour. hazelnut on the other hand failed to produce the creamy flavour but this dry dry feeling like as thou u popped too many nuts without drinking water.

I had rum and raisin and apple pie. apple pie was good but lost to island creamery. it was fragrant but didn;t contain some pieces of crust but i found a rather hard piece of apple in it instead. rum and raisin was good, but a bit high on alcohol. other than that it was rich and addictive.

auntie note: good place to chill but only a few chair available. free flow of drinks, so drink up. can try the flavours before buying, so do try to be satisfied w ur purchase.
